Continuing with my birds and hopefully my art improvements. This one has taken a good 7-8hours or so. Though a good 3+ hours of that was drawing time. *sigh* just wasn't happening but now I love love love it. Even if I say so myself :P

So I knew I wanted to do a raven. Though I wasn't really planning on doing it like this!! ..I see improvements in the girl but I think the raven (bird) turned out so so well... Thoughts??

The raven does look really nice, and I was going to mention some things about your nurse portrait, but you've seemed to have corrected them here (namely the sclera of the eye not being completely white, and some shadowing issues). Though it appears some bits are still not quite as they could be, for example, even though the raven does look really good, it appears out of focus or blurry. Now this would be less noticeable if he was by himself--I would have just assumed that was a painting style since that's a pretty common way of communicating. However, the woman's face appears in focus which makes for a strange mix of messages to me. Since its more likely that if they really appeared in a photograph their focus would be the same. Also, it usually helps hair appear more natural if the shading is more general versus trying to communicate every strand. Some artists I've watched paint start with a more midway color, and then "build up" the hair by adding in the shadows and the highlights in the darkest and lightest places versus trying to bring out every strand. Your photo for reference is actually perfect for this since the lack of light removes a lot of detail from the image so you can only see the lightest and darkest parts. Speaking of seeing, the ear really isn't as visible as you've made it here. In fact, since it is so hidden in the original, it probably would've been okay to hide it behind the hair completely. I know for myself that's a pretty tricky angle to get ears right in. I think in the future it may help to get a better photograph, or edit your photograph slightly to get more dynamic range of colors, that way you can have a clear view of aspects of the face and it's shape and how the light interacts with it. Keep drawing/painting!
