Description

I am practicing my digital painting. So here's one which I tried very hard with the background not just the character.

Title: Hunter.
Date: 1st/2nd/3rd Aug 2011.
Time: 23 hours work.
Media: Digital Painting.
Program: Photoshop 7.
Tools: Right hand index finger on laptop touchpad.

This was an interesting scene to look at. Whether or not it was intentional, on an LCD screen at normal viewing angle, the animal is barely visible. When you look at this scene at different angles, it jumps out. It is a very unusual and intriguing effect!

The hunter is very well done in terms of anatomy and composition, as is the creature lurking in the distance.

I do think, though, the background could use some improvement. Compared to the subjects, it is less detailed. More complex shading would help. The lighting is very ``flat'', which not only gives the background a somewhat flat appearance, but is also not as dramatic as the lighting of the animal. The lighting on the hunter is better than the background, but probably too bright to really get the sense she is in the woods. I get more of a sense that she is on a stage in front of a painted backdrop, than in the woods. Again, more dramatic lighting and shadows would likely remedy that.

Still, it is an interesting piece with some fun surprises.
