Description

I didn't really want to do this but people have said that my gallery isn't very versatile and I should do something other than busts and head shots of women. So I'm working on this... Not sure what it's going to end up as but meh.

Date: 20th - 21st October 2011.
Time: 9-10 hours
Type: Digital Painting.
Program: Photoshop 7.
Brush Set(s): Standard PS7 Brush Sets
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch (tablet).
Information: Bee was drawn from my own reference. Flowers were part photo reference of some flowers my boyfriend got me once and also part made up from reference of my "pretty boy" manip.

I tend to answer some basic questions in my critiques, so if there is anything I don't cover here that you want to know about, let me know!

What was the first thing I noticed?-> The depth of all the flowers. they're is a nice 'complexity' to them that makes this looks very natural.

What do I like the most?-> The wings of the bees. You've got the highlights on them perfectly! They're perfect!

What do I like the least?-> There's an almost WIP feeling to this. The shading is good but it's somewhat fuzzy in places while sharp and defined in others.

What do I think can be done to improve?-> The bees and the leaves in the backround of this look very nice. Not all the flowers seem to match their crispness and detail though. The topmost flower has a great pattern to it, but it's inner shadow is gray in color, a slightly blueish hue would work better and give a better sense of depth to the flower. The two big purple flowers look like they're not finished. They're somewhat fuzzy while most everything else has a nice crisp outline. Lastly, there doesn't seem to be an form of a light source in this drawing. There's shading to each individual flower or leaf, but none of them are casting a shadow on the other. With you next drawing, make sure to define a light source and keep it consistent throughout your whole drawing. Also keep in mind that the more intense your highlights are, the more intense your shadows will be. Your picture here is very bright, but doesn't have the shadows to match that. Overall though this is a very nice piece! Great job!
